We, the Salesians of Don Bosco, are an international organization of Catholic priests and brothers dedicated to the service of the young, especially the disadvantaged and marginalized. We are faithful to Don Bosco’s Preventive System of “reason, religion and loving-kindness” and strive to create environments characterized by a sense of belonging (home), a spirit of faith (parish), dynamic learning (school) and engaged social interaction (playground).
We were founded in the mid-1800s by St. John Bosco, an Italian saint–educator. There are 14114 Salesians of Don Bosco around the world and they are present in 134 countries in all six continents. Our works can be grouped into Regions, Provinces and local Presences. All of these, including our own Province of the Middle East (MOR), belong to the Salesian Family. The Salesian Family is a wider movement than the religious institution itself and includes several groups of people (including lay people) committed to the service of the young.
By walking with young people you take part in this adventure!
We as a Salesian Institution is proud of our centennial presence and service in Cairo.
Arrived in 1926, the Salesians immediately dedicated themselves to teaching and training the younger generation: first towards the Italian community in Egypt; subsequently to the local young people who over the years became the majority and are now the totality.
I promised God that until my last breath it would be for my poor young people. I study for you, I work for you, I live for you. I am also willing to give my life for you.
St. John Bosco
Don Bosco, a legendary Italian Saint, a luminous educationalist and a great champion of youth, is our inspiration and guiding star.
We study and imitate him, admiring in him a splendid blending of nature and grace.
He was deeply human, rich in the qualities of his people open to the realities of this earth; and he was just as deeply the man of God, filled with the gifts of the holy Spirit and living “as seeing him who is invisible”.
These two aspects combined to create a closely-knit life project, the service of the young.
Don Bosco’s magnificent vision of reaching out to millions of youth across the globe is being realized today through his faithful followers – priests, brothers and lay people. Through the variety of activities and various initiatives we aid young people to find happiness and lead a meaningful life. The headquarters are in Rome and it has branches in 133 countries. We are globally recognized as specialists in the field of education for youth.
