In collaboration with the Italian Embassy and the “EgyCopt” Foundation, the Don Bosco Salesian Institute in Cairo organized two scientific days for third-year preparatory students. The aim was to introduce them to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and to transform theories into fun and useful hands-on experiments.
More than 290 students from 42 schools in different governorates participated in the event.
The day included various interactive stations, such as:
-
Mathematics Station: Students learned the basics of encryption using Morse code and substitution ciphers, with interactive practical applications.
-
Information Technology Station: This included experiences in programming robots, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality.
-
Physics Station: Demonstrations included the transfer of electricity through water, electromagnetic energy, and its impact on modern technology.
-
Electrical Engineering Station: Students explored programmable logic controllers (PLC), Arduino, and the generation of renewable energy from wind and solar power.
-
Mechanics Station: A practical explanation of gear pumps, electric bike motors, and the combustion cycles in gasoline engines.
-
Life Skills Station: A workshop on IKIGAI – the art of living a meaningful life, to help students identify their career paths based on their passions and skills.
There was also a special focus on supporting girls in STEM fields, where statistics were presented about the increasing job opportunities for girls in science and engineering, highlighting the importance of breaking stereotypes and promoting the role of women in innovation and technology.
This event seems to have been a great initiative to inspire students and empower them, especially girls, to explore and pursue careers in STEM fields.
At the end of the day, Fr Morcos Hilmy, the Director of the Institute, and Mr. Rami Halim, the Headmaster, distributed certificates of appreciation to the teachers, organizers, and participating students, in recognition of their efforts in making this inspiring event a success.
A special thanks was given to all the participating schools, the students who showed great enthusiasm, and the teachers who contributed to providing an enjoyable educational experience.
